Enhancing the Developmental Potential of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining.

On June 7-8, USAID, The Diamond Development Initiative (DDI), and the World Bank's Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM) program held a conference on diamonds and development, entitled "Enhancing the Developmental Potential of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining" at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. The conference featured numerous panels with experts from around the world on subjects such as formalization of and regulatory structures for artisanal mining, land tenure/property rights, livelihoods and social welfare, and environmental issues. There was also discussion of how artisanal mining impacts and intersects with industry sectors further downstream.
