On October 2 to 4, 2012, the CKR members and invited guests met in Johannesburg to discuss and advance the CKR work as mandated by Administrative Decision (AD) 006-2011 "KPCS Ad Hoc Committee Administrative Decision on the Periodic Review of the KPCS" and AD 005-2011 "Amendment to the 2010 AD on the establishment of an Ad Hoc Committee for Exploring the Modalities of Enhancing the Efficiency of the Kimberley Process with a View to Provide Administrative Support for Its Activities". Botswana (Chair), Canada (Vice-Chair), DRC, EU, India, Russia, Namibia, South Africa, the US, the Civil Society Coalition, and the World Diamond Council were present, and Angola, Ghana, the UAE and Zimbabwe attended as guests. Israel was not able to attend.

Reform of the Kimberley Process was central to the discussion, as well as the expansion of the definition for conflict diamonds. The CKR also received updates from other KP working groups (namely the WGM and WGDE) on initiatives underway relating to the reform agenda. In addition, the CKR discussed how to address the remaining Priority Areas outlined in AD 006, and agreed on a way forward on the Administrative Support Mechanism as per AD 005.

The CKR Chair's report to Plenary this November will include an overview of the CKR discussions in Johannesburg as well a recommendations stemming from these discussions.
